TAKE A CLASS WITH BLACK DOG METAL ARTS

WEEKEND INTRODUCTION TO IRON CASTING WORKSHOP

We are offering a weekend workshop at a discounted rate for the month of September!

This course introduces the ancient art of iron casting. Each student will leave with one completed sand mold that will be poured during the iron pour with Big Picture Peoria on Saturday, October 12 or the First FEmale Run Iron Pour in Peoria, IL History on Saturday, November 2. After the iron pour you will have a completed cast iron sculpture!

This class will be taught over a 3 day period from Friday to Sunday at the Romain Arts & Cultural Center (Art Inc.) at 919 NE Jefferson Ave. On Friday from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. we will give a presentation on basic sculpture techniques, mold making methods, and what to expect throughout the workshop. We will discuss size restrictions of artworks, things to consider for Saturday, and more information about the upcoming iron pours. If you would like to participate in the iron pour, you can register at  www.blackdogmetalarts.com/pour-peoria

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with a one hour break at 12:00 p.m. for lunch) we will begin the sculpture process. You may bring in an object to be cast in iron or utilize the allotted time to create one from the provided materials. We will help you create your very own artwork by guiding you through basic modeling, carving, sculpting, and building techniques. The object that you create (or bring in) will be cast in iron.

After the lunch break we will begin the process of mold making! A mold is a hollow container used to give shape to molten hot metal. We will teach you the step by step process to create a mold of your artwork to be cast in iron.

On Sunday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. we will continue preparing molds. This time is also allotted to answer any questions about sculpture techniques, mold making, and the upcoming iron pours. By Sunday evening you will have a completed mold to be cast during one of the two historic iron pours, basic sculptural skills, and knowledge of the (second) oldest metal casting process.

Register for this unique opportunity by August 31st. The cost is $100 per person and covers the price of all materials for one sand mold. To create additional artworks and molds add $1/pound of sand used.

Friday: 2 Hours
